The Origin of Our Approach
Our practice emerged from a simple observation: the world's most profound thinkers maintained libraries that were extensions of their intellectual processes, not mere storage solutions. These spaces were carefully orchestrated environments where physical arrangement reflected mental architecture.
After years working in conventional interior design, we recognized a specific gap in the market. Collectors with substantial private libraries had few options beyond generic shelving or prohibitively expensive architectural firms. The middle ground—thoughtful, specialized library design at accessible price points—remained largely unexplored.
Our Philosophy
We believe that every serious reader eventually becomes a curator, whether they acknowledge it or not. The books you keep, the order you maintain, the volumes you display versus those you shelve spine-out—these choices reveal an implicit organizational philosophy.
Our role is to make that philosophy explicit, then provide the architectural and design framework to support it. We do not impose systems. Rather, we observe how you already interact with your collection, identify the friction points, and design solutions that feel inevitable rather than imposed.
"The library is not where you keep books, but where books keep you."
How We Work
Each project begins with an assessment phase. We need to understand not just the physical dimensions of your space and collection, but also your reading patterns, acquisition frequency, and long-term collecting intentions. A literary scholar organizing by critical period requires different infrastructure than a polymath whose collection crosses disciplines freely.
From there, we develop proposals that address both immediate needs and future growth. A well-designed library should accommodate a decade of acquisitions without requiring reconstruction. This requires mathematical precision combined with aesthetic restraint.
Our Team Background
Our core team includes individuals with backgrounds in architectural design, rare book conservation, and information science. This interdisciplinary foundation allows us to address the full spectrum of library development concerns—structural integrity, environmental control, cataloging methodology, and aesthetic integration.
We have completed projects ranging from 200-volume reading rooms to multi-thousand volume research libraries. Our smallest clients are serious readers beginning to accumulate meaningful collections. Our largest include private scholars, retired academics, and multi-generational family libraries.
Regional Focus
While based in Vancouver, we serve clients throughout British Columbia and Alberta. Certain services, particularly cataloging and organizational consultation, can be provided remotely to clients across Canada. Custom millwork and installation naturally require on-site presence.
